History

Intelligent Medical Systems, Inc., of Alpine, Texas, was founded in 1992 by Dr. Anthony Sforza, a physician with over 30 years of experience practicing medicine. Dr. Sforza ran a successful private practice for many years before taking charge of several multi-provider clinics and serving as Medical Director of a California county hospital.

Knowing the frustration and inefficiency in documentation and billing for small practices, and having six years prior experience as a computer programmer, Dr. Sforza decided to develop a simple, easy-to-use system that would reduce the burden on practicing physicians while improving the quality of care, reducing malpractice risks, and meeting compliance programs.

The initial SmartDoctor® site went live in Salinas, California in 1996. IMS now has SmartDoctor® sites across seven states and continues to grow. The company prides itself on maintaining close relationships with all client sites. High levels of customer satisfaction are evident in that no established site has ever switched to another Electronic Medical Records and Billing system.
